When deciding on new countertops, you will want to take several things into consideration. Do you go with granite?
Or should you stick with Durable and easy to care for? Well, have no fear, because we’re laying out each and every pro and con there is. You will be able to Figure out what’s important to you and your kitchen. And then figure out which choices fits the bill best! Quartz Countertops Beauty and durability come together nicely within a quartz countertop. Trendy, stylish and incredibly versatile, going the man-made route has a lot of benefits and some challenges too. There’s a certain amount of luxury that one feels when they add quartz countertops throughout their kitchen. So let's discover the why – and why not – to go this route when it comes to your renovation! Pro: Manufactured, as mentioned before, this is a man-made product, so there’s a wider range of colors available than when going with a natural material like granite or marble. You’ll get your pick of the litter, essentially. Also, quartz countertops are waterproof and can be used with an under-mounted sink! Pro: Non-Porous, because it is a non-porous material you won’t have to worry about re-sealing the tops! The resin binds all of the crystals together making it a zero pour zone and exceptionally sanitary – which is absolutely perfect for the kitchen. Con: Not As Heat-Resistant be careful with the hot pots and pans! Quartz won’t ever be as heat resistant as granite or other natural materials. Don’t just throw your hot pots and pans on the surface on these countertops because it can and will cause damage! A sudden change in temperature could cause your quartz to crack or even melt if it gets too hot. Pro: Quartz won’t harbor bacteria or viruses in its hard-to-clean pours because it doesn’t have any! Just clean the tops and be confident in it. You won’t find and extra cracks or crevices to clean here, so there aren’t any germs settling in to areas that you can’t reach or clean. Pro: Durability, because this is a manufactured material, the durability is top notch like that of concrete and rivals granite. Of course, it’s not completely indestructible but will be very hard to use and abuse with normal, everyday wear. If you want to make a good comparison though, we all know how strong diamond is, quartz is just as hard. Granite Countertops Naturally-made countertops are extremely popular, making granite one of the most trendy of choices. But before you dive into your purchase be sure that you’re doing your homework. Know the ins and outs of what makes granite such a great choice for your kitchen and why you may want to stray away based on your personal needs. Pro: Natural granite is 100% nature-made and quarried naturally. If you’re looking for organic materials then this is the first choice! Pro: Durability, just like quartz though, granite is also extremely durable. It can last a lifetime when taken care of correctly – of course, keep in mind, that it isn’t unbreakable. As long as you aren’t consistently banging extremely heavy objects on top of the counters, your granite will last as long as the house does (if not longer). What’s even more beneficial about granite countertops is that you have the option to chop, cut and even slice right on the surface without worrying about any harm done. Finally, along with its durable nature, it can withstand the heat! Hot pots and pans will generally not burn or scorch the granite! Con: Not uniform, but because of its 100% natural quality, you will never get a completely uniform appearance. It was designed by nature so no two pieces will ever be the same – but remember, you get to choose your slabs so choose wisely. Pro: One-of-a-kind, we may have written about how its non-uniform appearance can be a con but some of us see it has a huge pro! We love how eclectic and unique each and every piece will be. The chicness and slick topping that granite countertops will not only give to your kitchen – but your entire home – is unlike other materials and that’s truly because of its one-of-a-kind appearance. Con: Sealing, granite does have pours and will need to be sealed year after year. And because of these pours, you’ll need to pay attention to the possibility of staining and bacteria buildup. But as long as you keep the surfaces sealed, you won’t have to worry about all of the germs or the fear of stains. Keep in mind that lighter granite requires more attention when it comes to the sealing process though. Pro: Variety, although, quartz and other man-made materials will always have a larger variety when it comes to color (and patterns), you’d be surprised what you have to choose from with granite! Sometimes there can be around 20 choices to think about with different mineral contents and striations. You also get to choose your edges as well – fortunately, you can add some personalization here as well with both beveled edges or even going with some bull-nose ends. In conclusion, Granite or Quartz countertops, will indeed increase the value of your home, and provide durability and beauty to any given space. If you would like to visit a granite slab yard in the Los Angeles areas, we would suggest BCS stone either, in North Hollywood or in Orange County, for a fair pricing option. Once you have chosen your stone give G&G a visit for installation!

G & G feels that if you're looking for a "ball-park" price over the phone, then expect wildly INACCURATE quotes, because there are too many factors to consider without the fabricator having basic information and the color and material choice decided on. 5 Reasons Why Countertop Project Submission Forms, Over "Phone Quotes" Are Important: 1. You do not have to take measurements! You can simply use cell phone pictures of your surfaces, and upload them to the form or Text them to us directly, if you cannot upload from your cell phone. You can also call us directly if you'd rather we take your project information over the phone. 2. You need to know the "type" of sink (undermount/overmount) you will be using. It affects the fabrication price, and how the project will look when finished. 3. 6" backsplash, no backsplash or full backsplash? browse our Installations page to see different examples or styles, just remember for full backsplash, it will usually limit you to using Full Slabs, which raises cost. 4. Project Zip Code and Dwelling Info! If your project is in a high-rise in DTLA with narrow hallways and no street parking, or an apartment complex with similar challenging access, then it will effect your estimate. Those "phone quotes" don't factor things like this in, when you get the "real" estimate, the price will jump significantly, and you will feel untrusting. 5. Using Quartz is more time-efficient, than Natural Stone,. We bring out a quartz sample at your measurement appointment, (which allows for a quicker install time, if you're in a hurry), because quartz doesn't have "natural movement," as opposed to natural stone,(Granite,Quartzite,Marble). If choosing natural stone, G & G does have larger samples, but some people will want to see the entire slab or prefab at the slab yard. If this sounds like you, then, if choosing this approach, you can request to have the slab yard put your chosen slabs aside for your fabricator (Us) to then pick up, fabricate, then install. You're welcome to Call G & G to ask for Natural Stone-yard recommendations for low pricing. *If you've read this far, then you're the kind of client we look forward to working with, and there is a much greater chance that your project will exceed your expectations. (Using hand-tools makes it are virtually impossible for needed straight lines to be cut). * Where will the majority of your stone fabrication be done? (The bulk of all fabrication should be done in a shop away from the project, for health reasons, as well as straight line precision that can only be done by machines). * If you are requesting specific edge details, are you edges being fabricated with an air/water combination edge machine? (Edge detail requires very specific equipment, make sure your fabricator has access to them). #2 KNOW THE "LINGO." To ensure the success of your project, know how to communicate to the fabricator/installer the basics. This video will show you how to take easy measurements, of your cabinets, walls, or an outdoor space, you want to beautify, and easily communicate it! #3 SET YOUR BUDGET BEFORE YOU BEGIN * Fіgurе оut thе соѕt оf what уоu nееd, аnd what уоu саn аffоrd tо buy. * Set a budget for "unplanned expenses." * Remember to include cost of labor and materials, taxes and any shipping cost. * Budget for stone, labor, construction, BEFORE appliances. (Remember you can always choose less expensive appliances, solid carpentry and stone fabrication labor is essential to the success of any project). #4 KNOW YOUR STONES! GRANITE Pros: Granite countertop has been popular in home designs in the recent years. They’re aesthetically pleasing as well as durable. They also come in many different colors and designs, which make matching it to the style of the home easy. Cons: Granite has become a little less popular in the last year. Some people find the swirling design and fleck too busy. It’s also expensive as it’s a natural stone. Granite is also a porous stone, with tiny holes in it making it not as hygienic as other stones on the list. QUARTZ Pros: A Quartz countertop is quickly becoming the most popular choice amongst builders. It is stain, scratch and heat resistant. It’s also much more budget friendly than marble or granite. Manufactured quartz can also be designed to look like marble without the cost or poor durability. Cons: Quartz can be manufactured which some people find not as glamorous or luxurious. The man-made factor of it makes it seem less exclusive to those looking to build custom luxury houses. MARBLE Pros: Marble is a classic stone. It has come in and out of style but the good news is it’s back in. It screams luxury more than any other stone on this list. If you need a custom countertop, marble may be the way to go. Due to it’s softer state it’s easier to cut and fabricate into custom styles. The cool white and neutral tones of tans and grays make it a stone that can work in both traditional and modern spaces. Cons: There’s a reason marble is equated with luxury- it’s extremely expensive. Like granite, it’s also porous and susceptible to chips, cracks, and stains. Which to Chose? There are so many choices when it comes to stone countertops. There are both natural and manufactured stones available in a variety of styles, colors, and prices. Ask either Richard or Gagik about which style would work best for your home and look the best with your home architectural design. #5 CUSTOM EDGES, THE FINISHING TOUCH You've spent so much time and energy picking out the perfect stone for your countertops. Don't forget there's still one more thing to do: select the edge profile. This tutorial video will teach you not only the different edge choices, but give you insight to which custom edge is best for you. Remember most "pre-fab" stone either comes mitred, square edged or bullnose, Full slabs comes un-edged. Some edges cost extra because they are more labor intensive, keep that in mind when budgeting.
